Meet Programme Facilitator Nadia Salie

Nadia Salie is a Programme facilitator at Read to Rise as well as a student in education at CPUT. She is energetic, encouraging and dedicated to helping children to reach their full potential.

"Read to Rise has helped me affirm my passion for teaching whilst encouraging and supporting children with reading and enhancing their love for it."

Dr Suess wrote: "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places that you'll go."

"Reading opens up our minds to the endless possibilities that we can strive towards. I use my passion to encourage our young minds to do the same." says Nadia.

Celebrating National Book Week

Literacy non-profit organisation, Read to Rise, plans to distribute 3,000 Care Packs during September in celebration of National Book Week and International Literacy Day on 8 September 2020. From 1 September 2020, Read to Rise will be visiting Grade 2 learners at primary schools in Mitchells Plain and Soweto.

On 1-2 September 2020, the Read to Rise team visited Meadowridge Primary School in Lentegeur, Mitchells Plain. 128 Care Packs were handed out to Grade 2 learners who were excited to see Read to Rise. We thank our sponsors Wipro, Albert Wessels Trust and Alettes Rusks.

A Care Pack contains an 'Oaky and the Virus' book, an 'Oaky and the Virus' Activity book, a soap, mask, juice and snack. 'Oaky and the Virus' is a book that we published due to the pandemic which hopes to help children to understand how they can avoid the virus. There is a fun song for children to sing while washing their hands. The story was written by South African poet Athol Williams and illustrated by Taryn Lock and has been translated into 8 languages. Read to Rise promotes youth literacy in under-resourced communities in South Africa. To date, the organisation has conducted over 3,600 class programme and given out over 200,000 new story books. Read to Rise works with 20,000 learners at 75 primary schools every year, so the organisation is hoping to raise funds for 20,000 Care Packs.
